The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria, has strongly refuted a widely circulated press release claiming that the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) had been cancelled. The Council described the report as false, misleading, and the work of “mischief-makers.”
The fake announcement, which went viral across social media platforms on Saturday, July 19, 2025, alleged that the Federal Ministry of Education, in partnership with WAEC, had cancelled the entire 2025 WASSCE due to widespread exam malpractice, coordinated question paper leaks, and unauthorised digital distribution of exam materials.
In an official response released on Sunday, July 20, 2025, and signed by the Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina, WAEC firmly denied the report, calling it “spurious” and stating categorically that it did not issue such a notice.
“The said examination has not been cancelled,” the statement clarified.
WAEC condemned the false publication, noting that although the origin of the claim is unknown, it is clearly the work of individuals trying to discredit the Council and create unnecessary panic among candidates and stakeholders.
“The Council is confident that the false claim is being circulated by mischief-makers bent on damaging WAEC’s reputation and causing confusion among students who participated in the examination,” the statement added.
WAEC further disclosed that the marking of scripts has just been concluded and reassured the public that the 2025 WASSCE results would be officially released on or before Thursday, August 4, 2025.
The Council emphasized that all authentic announcements are published through its verified social media handles, trusted media outlets, and the Public Affairs Department.
“We urge the public to disregard the false publication and rely only on official WAEC communication channels,” the statement concluded.
